The LAPD is getting police cars of the future, including a tech-heavy Dodge Charger. No word yet on the car specs or engine capacity, but we know more than a little about the technology that will be letting the police do their jobs in it. Presented at CES 2013, it has a massive in-dash touchscreen interface, connected to a computer in the trunk, a huge floodlight with camera attached, solar panels on the roof, and molded backseat spaces for criminals to be sat. The trunk contains the PC and many various other electronics, which will severely limit what can put in the backseat, so no word on that aspect just yet. Another point they are probably going to have to work on before these cars are put into actual use: the computer behind the car is running Windows Vista Basic, and Vista is one of the most reviled and despised versions of Microsoft Windows, notorious for its lag time, “blue screen of death” frequency, and resource-hogging interface.
Other than those things, this police car of the future might well be on its way into police stations before much longer.
